Art of Cartier

Cartier is as synonymous with elegant jewelry as it is with artfully crafted timepieces, so it comes as no surprise that this year Cartier has managed to combine their rich heritage with a 5000-year-old artisanal technique and an inordinate amount of luxury to craft a watch that goes beyond haute horology.

Rotonde de Cartier 42 mm Panther with Granulation, 2013, Manufacture mechanical manual-winding movement, calibre 9601 MC, 18K Yellow Gold case set with 306 brilliant-cut Diamonds, 22K Yellow Gold dial, granulation with panther motif, apple-shaped Blued Steel hands & semi-matt Black alligator skin strap with clasp also set with 43 Diamonds.

The latest Rotonde de Cartier 42 mm -to be officially unveiled at The Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie 25 January, 2013, in Geneva, sports the already 165 year old iconic panther symbol of Cartier, showcasing an art that dates back to ancient Egypt, which was then successively perfected by the Italians, prior to the rise of the Roman Empire. Cartier has of course adapted this style in their own unique way to suit modern tastes as well as the historically minded, and has thus created one of the most stunning pieces in their Cartier d’Art line.

The Rotonde de Cartier 42 mm Panther with Granulation has been impressively created using millennia-old goldsmith’s technique of granulation and immaculate artistic craftsmanship. Due to the complexity of its execution, produced in a limited edition of just 20 examples.

These ancient goldsmith’s techniques involve the fusion of the Gold granules, resulting in a particularly stunning exotic pattern which has known its highest point during the 1st millennium in Etruria. The famous Etruscan granulated items have resiliently stood the test of time. The panther motif on the dial of this Rotonde de Cartier watch has been realized from 22-K Yellow Gold, each tiny Gold granule having been carefully applied by hand, one at a time. This is the reason behind the exquisite sparkle of the dial, which can be admired from virtually any angle. Wearable work of art.
