Apple Cranberry Crisp


Everyone has their own favorite Apple Crisp recipe or memory. Wonder. Wisdom. Words. first tried this one, in similar variations, courtesy of Alfalfa’s Market cafe in Boulder Colorado -while in grad school. Love at first taste. A perennial favorite then, with crisp apples and a mix of seasonal berries or rhubarb. Now we really enjoy the flavor combination of tart fresh cranberry with apple. Suits the season. Such a simple, wholesome dessert to create, and so delicious to eat.


Vegan Apple Cranberry Crisp, Using fresh Fall ingredients, this is a great October treat to bake when the apples are ready to pick, and the weather gets a little cooler outside. We love how the whole house fills with the sweet aromas of apple, vanilla, and spice. Warms the soul. Using this season’s organic apples, hand-picked from the orchard, just makes the whole thing that much sweeter.


For the filling:

  • 3-4 lbs. organic apples
  • 1 cup organic fresh cranberries
  • 1/4 cup raw honey
  • 1/2 cup apple cider or water
  • 1 Tbsp arrowroot powder
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/4 tsp allspice

For the topping:

  • 1 cup organic rolled oats
  • 1 cup gluten free flour
  • 1/2 cup maple sugar
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/3 cup macadamia nut oil
  • 3 Tbsp coconut milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts (optional)
  • pinch of sea salt


  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Peel, core, and slice apples into 3/4 inch chunks.
  2. Dissolve arrowroot in apple cider or water, set aside. Place apples and cranberries in a mixing bowl. Add spices and mix.
  3. Pour into a baking dish. Pour arrowroot mixture over the apples.
  4. To prepare the topping, mix all the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl, add macadamia nut oil, coconut milk, and vanilla. Mix well until the consistency is crumbly.
  5. Crumble topping over the apples, and bake for 45 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. Serve alone or with your choice of yogurt or coconut cream.
