Find Your Center May 4th 2019 + Celebrate World Labyrinth Day. Throughout history labyrinths have served as representations of journeys into the sacred. An ancient practice used for millennia by many faiths as a quest for meaning, spiritual centering, contemplation, meditation and prayer. Entering the serpentine path of a labyrinth, you open the senses and focus on the process of taking slow and deliberate steps, while bringing the mind to prayer, chant, or a spiritual question to contemplate during the walk to the center. Unlike a maze, a labyrinth has only one path to the center and one direction out, which is called unicursal (one line). In this way, the labyrinth symbolizes a journey to a predetermined destination, a reflection then of how you walk your life. The metaphorical quest of life from birth to spiritual awakening to death.
It is believed that the labyrinth’s origins are in the image of the spiral. A curving line around a central point, which symbolizes movement, growth, change, and a continually shifting perspective that is inspiring and life-renewing. An archetypal shape that can be found extensively woven into the very fabric of the natural world, represented mathematically in the Golden Ratio, also known as the Divine Proportion. Classical labyrinths are based on this template, rooted in what is referred to as Sacred Geometry. Sacred Geometry is the reverence for geometric patterns and numerical ratios that are reoccurring and universal. As such, sacred geometry is connected to the belief that by exploring these patterns, one may gain insight into the structures of the Universe.
In our modern world, there is an increasing need to take time for self-reflection and simplicity and just as those who came before us, there is the desire to build a bridge between mind body and spirit. As we unite those aspects of our life experience, we find that we are able to live with a greater sense of wellness and fulfillment. The meditative experience of walking a labyrinth is an invaluable tool for contemplating the journey of one’s life, toward integration and the individuation of the Self. Therapeutic and spiritual techniques of our ancestors are just as pertinent today as they were at their inception. Walking the labyrinth is a sacred journey which offers the opportunity to explore areas of one of the most complex mysteries of all, that of our own psyche. Enjoy The Quest!
