American Home

A Place To Call Home: Tradition, Style, And Memory In The New American House By Gil Schafer III (Author) & Eric Piasecki (Photographer), Published By Rizzoli, 2018.

For award-winning New York-based architect Gil Schafer, the most successful houses are the ones that celebrate the small moments of life, houses with timeless charm that are imbued with memory and anchored in a distinct sense of place. Essentially, Schafer believes a house is truly successful when the people who live there consider it home. It’s this belief, and Schafer’s rare ability to translate his clients’ deeply personal visions of how they want to live into a physical home that reflects those dreams, that has established him as one of the most sought-after, highly-regarded architects of our time. Wonder. Wisdom. Words. has long-time admired Schafer’s comfortable, gracious, and understated New England projects and collaborations with interior designers.

Detail Pages Of Interiors From A Place To Call Home: Tradition, Style, And Memory In The New American House.

In this big, beautiful new book, A Place To Call Home Schafer follows up his bestselling The Great American House, by exploring the ways in which place is fundamental to the idea of home, sharing his process, taking readers on a detailed tour of seven beautifully realized houses in a range of styles located around the country. Each in a unique place, and each with a character all its own. 250 lush, full color photographs of these seven houses and other never-before-seen projects, including exterior, interior, and landscape details, invite readers into Schafer’s world of comfortable classicism.

Detail Pages Of Interiors/Exteriors From A Place To Call Home: Tradition, Style, And Memory In The New American House.

A Place To Call Home: Tradition, Style, And Memory In The New American House, Schafer shows how traditional and classical principles can blend with a sense of place to create homes in a range of styles, all with the satisfying tensions of fancy and simple, past and present. “I am, to be sure, a classical architect,” says Schafer. “As important as a commitment to classicism has been to me, no less meaningful is the desire to create architecture that is effectively responsive to a set of circumstances.” While Schafer is absolutely a classical architect, he is in fact a modern traditionalist, and A Place To Call Home showcases how he interprets traditional principles for a multiplicity of architectural styles within contemporary ways of living. Creating a cohesiveness that shortchanges neither history nor modernity.

Oak Tree Recipe

Ever wonder how to grow Oak trees from acorns? It’s easy! Late Fall is the perfect time of year to collect acorns to start growing new Oak trees over the Winter. Late dropping acorns (October and November) are typically healthiest. A healthy acorn specimen suitable for growing an Oak tree is one that is plump with a cap that is loose and/or easily removed. A naturally split or cracked acorn is fine, but do not collect damaged or crushed acorns.

How To Grow Oak Trees From Acorns:

  1. After inspecting the collected acorns, place them in a mixture of 1/2 peat and 1/2 loose barley in a clear zip-lock plastic food storage bag. Do not crowd the acorns. They should be loose in the mixture and the bag should not be more than half-full.
  2. Seal the bag and store it in the refrigerator throughout the Winter. Periodically check the moisture level -it should be damp, but not wet. At some point during the winter, the acorns should split open and white sprouts should begin to appear and grow.

When To Plant Acorns:

  1. In early Spring (late March to early April), fill individual plant pots with clean potting soil. Place the sprouted acorns horizontally in the soil about 1 1/2 inches deep and water. Place the pots in a south-facing window or under an artificial light source and keep the soil moist.
  2. During the next few weeks, the acorns will sprout into a sapling, with a few tiny, yet visible Oak leaves. As the trees grow, transplant them into larger containers. Do not allow the trees to become root bound, or dried out.
  3. You may keep your trees in plant pots indefinitely, or until they have reached a desired size to plant outside. Before planting them in the ground, introduce the trees slowly to the outdoors by placing them in cooler areas such as on a porch, or in a shed or garage for a few days at a time. Transplant them outside in the early Fall before danger of frost.

Fall Forecast

When we think about Autumn, there is a color that quickly comes to mind: Orange. That being said, Autumn Maple is a hue that is one of the top color trends each Fall season, a Wonder. Wisdom. Words. perennial favorite for introducing dazzling warmth into any palette. A quintessential Autumn shade that blends Tawny and Russet, and instantly infuses any outfit or home with energy and vitality. A rich, textured color that looks good enough to eat!

More than any other color in the palette, Autumn Maple tells a visual story through its expressive Fall coloration. It speaks of sleepy maple trees with leaves that hang low, exhausted from the Summer sun, exuding an Orangey-Brown glow that compliments the seasonal changes with a storyteller’s touch.

Lots of brands are embracing the beloved Autumn Maple look this season. A surprisingly versatile hue, it is one that you can integrate into your everyday wardrobe, for it has a sporty feel to it, and can be dressed up for a sartorially sublime occasion. This warm shade in various tones radiates optimism, and brings depth and refinement to any look or interior design project.

Keep the color going in your Fall garden with a combination of annuals and perennials with an Autumn Maple color scheme. For the perfect late-season bloomer, you can’t go wrong with Fall Mums, perfect for mass plantings with their domes of rich, jewel-tone colors, and tight, mounded habit and stunning bloom cover. To get the maximum effect from far away, stick to only one or two colors. A large grouping of Mums can awaken any drab Fall landscape.

Pumpkin Butter’s festive taste and intoxicating aroma make it a Fall classic. The name is a little deceiving because there’s actually no butter in the recipe, but you use it like a spread or jam. It tastes like delicious pumpkin pie -sweet, rich, and full of flavor. The look plus taste of Fall! It’s also vegan and gluten-free. Plus, it’s fun and easy to prepare. As you might expect, this packs well and makes a handsome Autumn Maple gift. Just don’t forget to make a batch for yourself! It also keeps in the fridge for a few weeks and freezes well so you can make it now to share, and have one on hand to savor the season. Enjoy!

Moon Magic

Full Moons have forever been a mystical time of connecting with our spiritual, sacred feminine selves. Many Goddess and earth-based traditions honored all phases of the Moon, while Eastern religions like Hinduism and Buddhism still celebrate special holidays according to the lunar calendar. While New Moons are associated with new beginnings, Full Moons represent the culmination of energy: fruition, completion and celebration, as well as releasing and shedding of the old to pave way for a whole new cycle.

Spirit Voyage. Ajeet Kaur With Ezra Landis & Raffa Martinez. This is a song to connect to the Moon, to the grandmother guiding wisdom. It is a song of love, letting go, and embracing the wisdom and magical mystery of life. On the Full Buck Moon July 27th 2018, there will be a total lunar eclipse -the longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century. From start to finish, the event will last four hours. Although the eclipse won’t be visible in the U.S., you can catch it live via community webcast on astronomy site Slooh if interested.

Because the Full Moon increases psychic and emotional sensitivity, many feel its effects very palpably -often starting the days leading up to the Full Moon, While it can feel overwhelming to deal with the intense energies it brings up, learning to harness the gifts of this special time can help us better manage everything that comes up, and create powerful shifts in our lives. Here are three Magical Full Moon Rituals to embrace the many gifts of this blessed time every month. Experiment with whatever you feel guided to. It’s a Full Moon after all, so trust your intuition!

1.) Shed Light On Darkness Journal Ritual

One of the reasons we can feel so emotional during a Full Moon is because it’s a time of making the unknown known, the unconscious conscious, the hidden seen. Naturally, this includes relationships and patterns that are not in alignment with our truth and highest good. If we don’t allow ourselves to face and process these insights, we may feel hypersensitive, confused and overwhelmed. The best thing we can do is to take some time to express everything we are feeling in a safe and healthy way.

A simple ritual to bring light to any darkness you are facing is to take a sheet of paper and write out everything you are feeling, uncensored. Notice any surprises or insights you gain about issues that are important to you. Have you been ignoring or suppressing your feelings in a certain area? Have you been settling, compromising, or disowning your truth and boundaries? Are you ready to release what’s no longer serving you? You don’t need to know the answers, but it’s important to ask the questions.

In the next steps, you will learn how to awaken your intuition, which will guide you on any action to take and changes to make as you move forward. For now, once you feel you have released all that you need to on this sheet of paper, (very safely, perhaps in a pot) burn it. You can write an intention at the end, such as, “I now release all that no longer serves me for total healing, purification and transmutation, for my best and highest good.” As the paper burns, wash away any ashes or surrender them to Mother Earth, and feel the lightness of releasing what lurked in the dark before. Remember it’s always darkest before the dawn.

2.) Clear Your Energy Smudging Ritual

If you choose to do the above ritual, smudging is wonderful to perform after, although it can be done independently, and any time as well. Of course, for this, you will need to have a sage bundle handy, which you can craft, or buy from most spiritual/new age shops or online. Smudging is a powerful energy clearing ritual used in Native and earth-based traditions during ceremonies. It is said to help release negative, toxic, stagnant energies, and even get rid of earth-bound spirits and attachments. A Full Moon night is an especially potent time for a smudging ritual. After facing and releasing what you need to, you can then ceremoniously clear it away with the smoke of sacred sage.

To perform the ritual, burn the dried sage bundle, keeping a fire-safe dish underneath to catch the ashes, and simply waft it around your entire body (at about a two-feet long distance). As you do so, you can again set an intention such as, “I release all that no longer serves me for my highest good.” After smudging yourself, you can smudge your home by waving the wand in the corners and centers of each room -or anywhere you feel guided. Trust your intuition, as you may feel the need to smudge some unexpected places or linger somewhere a little longer. Be sure to perform this very safely, keeping a distance from fabrics, pets and children. You need only wave the wand once or twice in each area to get the smoke flowing there, as you keep moving along.

After the ritual, open all your windows to air out the smoke and let new, fresh energy, and ideally Moonlight, into your home. Bonus Step: Since your space is now clear, you can go around the house and re-program the energy by setting intentions for what you want to bring into your space and life instead. You can clap three times at the end of each intention to seal it in, or if you have a bell or singing bowl, ring it three times for extra blessings. Finally, you can also clear spiritual objects like crystals, oracle decks, sacred texts and malas by waving the sage bundle around each one three times.
