Labyrinth Lore

★ Stone Labyrinth ★

Find Your Center May 4th 2019 + Celebrate World Labyrinth Day. Throughout history labyrinths have served as representations of journeys into the sacred. An ancient practice used for millennia by many faiths as a quest for meaning, spiritual centering, contemplation, meditation and prayer. Entering the serpentine path of a labyrinth, you open the senses and focus on the process of taking slow and deliberate steps, while bringing the mind to prayer, chant, or a spiritual question to contemplate during the walk to the center. Unlike a maze, a labyrinth has only one path to the center and one direction out, which is called unicursal (one line). In this way, the labyrinth symbolizes a journey to a predetermined destination, a reflection then of how you walk your life. The metaphorical quest of life from birth to spiritual awakening to death.

★ Sacred Geometry ★

It is believed that the labyrinth’s origins are in the image of the spiral. A curving line around a central point, which symbolizes movement, growth, change, and a continually shifting perspective that is inspiring and life-renewing. An archetypal shape that can be found extensively woven into the very fabric of the natural world, represented mathematically in the Golden Ratio, also known as the Divine Proportion. Classical labyrinths are based on this template, rooted in what is referred to as Sacred Geometry. Sacred Geometry is the reverence for geometric patterns and numerical ratios that are reoccurring and universal. As such, sacred geometry is connected to the belief that by exploring these patterns, one may gain insight into the structures of the Universe.

★ Lavender Garden Labyrinth ★

In our modern world, there is an increasing need to take time for self-reflection and simplicity and just as those who came before us, there is the desire to build a bridge between mind body and spirit. As we unite those aspects of our life experience, we find that we are able to live with a greater sense of wellness and fulfillment. The meditative experience of walking a labyrinth is an invaluable tool for contemplating the journey of one’s life, toward integration and the individuation of the Self. Therapeutic and spiritual techniques of our ancestors are just as pertinent today as they were at their inception. Walking the labyrinth is a sacred journey which offers the opportunity to explore areas of one of the most complex mysteries of all, that of our own psyche. Enjoy The Quest!

Labyrinths For The Spirit By Jim Buchanan. “By moving in a focused and directed way through the labyrinth, we begin to relax, and our sixth sense becomes heightened.” That’s how the author, a renowned labyrinth-maker and land artist, describes the effect of walking the traditional and contemporary labyrinths explored here. Examples range from classic Greek and medieval designs to patterns used in Native American basketry, as well as the author’s distinctive creations, which push the boundaries of the form. Connecting the spiritual aspects of walking the labyrinth to the creative act of construction, the guide offers illustrated instructions for making more than 20 different labyrinths.

The Overstory

The Overstory: A Novel, By Richard Powers, Published By W.W. Norton & Company, The 2019 Pulitzer Prize Winner For Fiction

The winner of the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for fiction receives Wonder. Wisdom. Words. worthy recommendation. A wise, deep, impassioned novel of activism and resistance, that is also a stunning evocation of, and ode to, the natural world. The Overstory is the quintessential eco-epic for the climate change era, whose win couldn’t come at a more pivotal time in history. It’s been called “An ingeniously structured narrative that branches and canopies like the trees at the core of the story, whose wonder and connectivity echo those of the humans living amongst them.” An allegorical ecological masterpiece writ large that the Pulitzer committee praises for approaching trees and the threats facing them with reverence and an urgency that could be enough to change minds.

The Overstory: A Novel By Richard Powers

From the roots to the crown and back to the seeds, The Overstory unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fables that range from antebellum New York to the late twentieth-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond, exploring the essential conflict on this planet: the one taking place between humans and nonhumans. There is a world alongside ours that is vast, slow, interconnected, resourceful, magnificently inventive, and almost invisible to us. This is the story of a handful of people who learn how to see that world and who are drawn up into its unfolding catastrophe. The Overstory is a book for all readers who despair of humanity’s self-imposed separation from the rest of creation and who hope for the transformative, regenerating possibility of a homecoming. If the trees of this earth could speak, what would they tell us?

Seeds Of Love

Seeds of Love: Special Evening With Deepak Chopra & World-Renowned Environmental Leader Vandana Shiva,ABC HomePlant-Based Restaurant NYC, February 5th, 2019. Evening includes high vibration tonics, mezzas, and music + poetry by Haleh Liza.

Ecologist, philosopher, and founder of the Navdanya environmental conservation movement, Dr. Shiva was named by Forbes magazine as one of the seven most influential women in the world today. Celebrated for her plant intelligence seed freedom curriculum that focuses on the reclaiming of traditional methods of seed saving, sowing, growing and harvesting to insure a healthy future for us all. Highlighting the inherent rights of people to practice indigenous, organic, and biodiverse farming as an alternative to industrial agriculture. With a dedication to renewing a sacred food system, one that is aligned with the natural rhythms of Mother Earth, ecology, human health and global social justice. Deepak Chopra and Dr. Shiva will discuss themes from her new book, One Earth, One Humanity Vs. The 1%.

One Earth, One Humanity Vs. The 1% by Dr. Vandana Shiva, Forthcoming March 2019.

Dr. Vandana Shiva’s most radical and important ideas are represented in lucid form in this essential primer for those who wish to understand the forces that threaten our planet. Her vision of “one earth, one humanity” and its scientific and cultural roots are explained in depth; the monopolistic economic machinations of the 1% are exposed; the genetic manipulations of Monsanto are uncovered; and “philanthropists” are exposed as the new Robber Barons. Vandana Shiva’s struggles on the streets and in homes and farms across the world have yielded a set of principles based on inclusion, nonviolence, reclaiming the commons, and freely sharing the earth’s resources. These ideals, which she calls “earth democracy,” serve as an urgent call to peace and as the basis for a just and sustainable future. Unafraid to confront authority and name names, this new book exposes the global elite, uncovering their links to the rising tide of fundamentalism, violence against women, and planetary death.

American Home

A Place To Call Home: Tradition, Style, And Memory In The New American House By Gil Schafer III (Author) & Eric Piasecki (Photographer), Published By Rizzoli, 2018.

For award-winning New York-based architect Gil Schafer, the most successful houses are the ones that celebrate the small moments of life, houses with timeless charm that are imbued with memory and anchored in a distinct sense of place. Essentially, Schafer believes a house is truly successful when the people who live there consider it home. It’s this belief, and Schafer’s rare ability to translate his clients’ deeply personal visions of how they want to live into a physical home that reflects those dreams, that has established him as one of the most sought-after, highly-regarded architects of our time. Wonder. Wisdom. Words. has long-time admired Schafer’s comfortable, gracious, and understated New England projects and collaborations with interior designers.

Detail Pages Of Interiors From A Place To Call Home: Tradition, Style, And Memory In The New American House.

In this big, beautiful new book, A Place To Call Home Schafer follows up his bestselling The Great American House, by exploring the ways in which place is fundamental to the idea of home, sharing his process, taking readers on a detailed tour of seven beautifully realized houses in a range of styles located around the country. Each in a unique place, and each with a character all its own. 250 lush, full color photographs of these seven houses and other never-before-seen projects, including exterior, interior, and landscape details, invite readers into Schafer’s world of comfortable classicism.

Detail Pages Of Interiors/Exteriors From A Place To Call Home: Tradition, Style, And Memory In The New American House.

A Place To Call Home: Tradition, Style, And Memory In The New American House, Schafer shows how traditional and classical principles can blend with a sense of place to create homes in a range of styles, all with the satisfying tensions of fancy and simple, past and present. “I am, to be sure, a classical architect,” says Schafer. “As important as a commitment to classicism has been to me, no less meaningful is the desire to create architecture that is effectively responsive to a set of circumstances.” While Schafer is absolutely a classical architect, he is in fact a modern traditionalist, and A Place To Call Home showcases how he interprets traditional principles for a multiplicity of architectural styles within contemporary ways of living. Creating a cohesiveness that shortchanges neither history nor modernity.

Shamanic Oracle

Mystical Shaman Oracle Cards, by Alberto Villoldo (Author), Colette Baron-Reid (Author), Marcela Lobos (Contributor), Jena DellaGrottaglia (Illustrator) 2018. Deluxe-packaged oracle deck based on the wisdom and beauty of the shamanic world.

Legends say that before there was time, before there was language, there were the sacred symbols. The Medicine Wheel, the Curse, the Eagle, the Jaguar, and others spoke to us intimately. In their countless manifestations, they offered hope, expressed caution, illuminated opportunity, inspired creation, courted power, and shared knowledge. The sacred symbols belong to the realm of archetypes and the collective unconscious, the spiritual common ground shared by peoples modern and ancient.

Details Of  The Journey, The Medicine Wheel & The Sacrifice Mystical Shaman Oracle Cards.

Now, three master teachers and healers –Alberto Villoldo, Colette Baron-Reid, and Marcela Lobos, have brought their wisdom and talents together to offer a doorway into the realm of the sacred symbols with the Mystical Shaman Oracle. When you consult the oracle, you summon power and insight that can help you understand the present, heal the past, and influence the course of your future. We can become our own prophets and visionaries. We can converse directly with Spirit, dialogue with the forces of nature, speak with the great archetypes, the ancient gods, without intermediaries. No one needs to stand between the Creator and you, or between you and the great powers of nature.

The Owl Mystical Shaman Oracle Card.

Every card is a dynamic snapshot of a situation or a moment, and shows you how the moment can transform from one condition to another. The symbols present the forces and influences at play and the direction that the energy is moving toward. After you meditate on the image and the power that it holds, consult the text in the guidebook. Each card has three important messages: The Essence. The Invitation. The Medicine.

Feminine Wisdom

Feminine Wisdom In Leadership: Dakini Teachings From The Tibetan Tradition. An Evening With Judith Simmer-Brown, ABC Home NYC, September 27th 2018.

Tibetan Buddhism offers a paradigm for leadership inspired by the sacred feminine that flourishes in the face of change and fosters community through dialogue. This presentation draws from the dakini tradition of Tibet as well as cutting edge organizational development literature to suggest fresh approaches to authentic leadership.

Judith Simmer-Brown, PhD, is Distinguished Professor of Contemplative & Religious Studies at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado, where she has taught since 1978. As Buddhist practitioner since the early 1970’s and student of Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche, her senior teaching specialties include meditation practice, Buddhist philosophy, tantric Buddhism, and contemplative higher education. Her book, Dakini’s Warm Breath, explores the feminine principle as it reveals itself in meditation practice and everyday life for women and men.

About

The Naropa + ABC Home partnership, co-presented with Garrison Institute & Tricycle Magazine, offers a New York City audience the rare opportunity to experience the practices and pedagogies that lie at the heart of Naropa University in Boulder, CO. Through quarterly presentations, performances and workshops featuring Naropa faculty, they endeavor to integrate a contemplative view into society in order to foster the next generation of enlightened leaders.

Dakini’s Warm Breath: The Feminine Principle in Tibetan Buddhism by Judith Simmer-Brown, Shambhala, 2001.

The primary emblem of the feminine in Tibetan Buddhism is the dakini, or “sky-dancer,” a semi-wrathful spirit-woman who manifests in visions, dreams, and meditation experiences. Western scholars and interpreters of the dakini, influenced by Jungian psychology and feminist goddess theology, have shaped a contemporary critique of Tibetan Buddhism in which the dakini is seen as a psychological “shadow,” a feminine savior, or an objectified product of patriarchal fantasy. According to Judith Simmer-Brown -who writes from the point of view of an experienced practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism, such interpretations are inadequate.

In the spiritual journey of the meditator, Simmer-Brown demonstrates, the dakini symbolizes levels of personal realization: the sacredness of the body, both female and male; the profound meeting point of body and mind in meditation; the visionary realm of ritual practice; and the spacious qualities of mind itself. Grounded in the author’s personal encounter with the dakini, this unique study will appeal to both male and female spiritual seekers interested in goddess worship, women’s spirituality, and the tantric tradition.
