Labyrinth Lore

★ Stone Labyrinth ★

Find Your Center May 4th 2019 + Celebrate World Labyrinth Day. Throughout history labyrinths have served as representations of journeys into the sacred. An ancient practice used for millennia by many faiths as a quest for meaning, spiritual centering, contemplation, meditation and prayer. Entering the serpentine path of a labyrinth, you open the senses and focus on the process of taking slow and deliberate steps, while bringing the mind to prayer, chant, or a spiritual question to contemplate during the walk to the center. Unlike a maze, a labyrinth has only one path to the center and one direction out, which is called unicursal (one line). In this way, the labyrinth symbolizes a journey to a predetermined destination, a reflection then of how you walk your life. The metaphorical quest of life from birth to spiritual awakening to death.

★ Sacred Geometry ★

It is believed that the labyrinth’s origins are in the image of the spiral. A curving line around a central point, which symbolizes movement, growth, change, and a continually shifting perspective that is inspiring and life-renewing. An archetypal shape that can be found extensively woven into the very fabric of the natural world, represented mathematically in the Golden Ratio, also known as the Divine Proportion. Classical labyrinths are based on this template, rooted in what is referred to as Sacred Geometry. Sacred Geometry is the reverence for geometric patterns and numerical ratios that are reoccurring and universal. As such, sacred geometry is connected to the belief that by exploring these patterns, one may gain insight into the structures of the Universe.

★ Lavender Labyrinth ★

In our modern world, there is an increasing need to take time for self-reflection and simplicity and just as those who came before us, there is the desire to build a bridge between mind body and spirit. As we unite those aspects of our life experience, we find that we are able to live with a greater sense of wellness and fulfillment. The meditative experience of walking a labyrinth is an invaluable tool for contemplating the journey of one’s life, toward integration and the individuation of the Self. Therapeutic and spiritual techniques of our ancestors are just as pertinent today as they were at their inception. Walking the labyrinth is a sacred journey which offers the opportunity to explore areas of one of the most complex mysteries of all, that of our own psyche. Enjoy The Quest!

Labyrinths For The Spirit By Jim Buchanan. “By moving in a focused and directed way through the labyrinth, we begin to relax, and our sixth sense becomes heightened.” That’s how the author, a renowned labyrinth-maker and land artist, describes the effect of walking traditional and contemporary labyrinths explored here. Examples range from classic Greek and medieval designs to patterns used in Native American basketry, as well as the author’s distinctive creations, which push the boundaries of the form. Connecting the spiritual aspects of walking the labyrinth to the creative act of construction, the guide offers illustrated instructions for making more than 20 different labyrinths.

Seasons Spring

Springtime Salutations. Books that endure as magnificent manifestos for the vibrant curiosity with which we are all born, and which we risk losing if we imperceptibly, yet steadily, slip into apathy and resignation. Above all, she extends a reminder that the faculty for wonder is our most precious natural resource and our greatest responsibility to conserve.

Seeds Of Love

Seeds of Love: Special Evening With Deepak Chopra & World-Renowned Environmental Leader Vandana Shiva,ABC HomePlant-Based Restaurant NYC, February 5th, 2019. Evening includes high vibration tonics, mezzas, and music + poetry by Haleh Liza.

Ecologist, philosopher, and founder of the Navdanya environmental conservation movement, Dr. Shiva was named by Forbes magazine as one of the seven most influential women in the world today. Celebrated for her plant intelligence seed freedom curriculum that focuses on the reclaiming of traditional methods of seed saving, sowing, growing and harvesting to insure a healthy future for us all. Highlighting the inherent rights of people to practice indigenous, organic, and biodiverse farming as an alternative to industrial agriculture. With a dedication to renewing a sacred food system, one that is aligned with the natural rhythms of Mother Earth, ecology, human health and global social justice. Deepak Chopra and Dr. Shiva will discuss themes from her new book, One Earth, One Humanity Vs. The 1%.

One Earth, One Humanity Vs. The 1% by Dr. Vandana Shiva, Forthcoming March 2019.

Dr. Vandana Shiva’s most radical and important ideas are represented in lucid form in this essential primer for those who wish to understand the forces that threaten our planet. Her vision of “one earth, one humanity” and its scientific and cultural roots are explained in depth; the monopolistic economic machinations of the 1% are exposed; the genetic manipulations of Monsanto are uncovered; and “philanthropists” are exposed as the new Robber Barons. Vandana Shiva’s struggles on the streets and in homes and farms across the world have yielded a set of principles based on inclusion, nonviolence, reclaiming the commons, and freely sharing the earth’s resources. These ideals, which she calls “earth democracy,” serve as an urgent call to peace and as the basis for a just and sustainable future. Unafraid to confront authority and name names, this new book exposes the global elite, uncovering their links to the rising tide of fundamentalism, violence against women, and planetary death.

American Home

A Place To Call Home: Tradition, Style, And Memory In The New American House By Gil Schafer III (Author) & Eric Piasecki (Photographer), Published By Rizzoli, 2018.

For award-winning New York-based architect Gil Schafer, the most successful houses are the ones that celebrate the small moments of life, houses with timeless charm that are imbued with memory and anchored in a distinct sense of place. Essentially, Schafer believes a house is truly successful when the people who live there consider it home. It’s this belief, and Schafer’s rare ability to translate his clients’ deeply personal visions of how they want to live into a physical home that reflects those dreams, that has established him as one of the most sought-after, highly-regarded architects of our time. Wonder. Wisdom. Words. has long-time admired Schafer’s comfortable, gracious, and understated New England projects and collaborations with interior designers.

Detail Pages Of Interiors From A Place To Call Home: Tradition, Style, And Memory In The New American House.

In this big, beautiful new book, A Place To Call Home Schafer follows up his bestselling The Great American House, by exploring the ways in which place is fundamental to the idea of home, sharing his process, taking readers on a detailed tour of seven beautifully realized houses in a range of styles located around the country. Each in a unique place, and each with a character all its own. 250 lush, full color photographs of these seven houses and other never-before-seen projects, including exterior, interior, and landscape details, invite readers into Schafer’s world of comfortable classicism.

Detail Pages Of Interiors/Exteriors From A Place To Call Home: Tradition, Style, And Memory In The New American House.

A Place To Call Home: Tradition, Style, And Memory In The New American House, Schafer shows how traditional and classical principles can blend with a sense of place to create homes in a range of styles, all with the satisfying tensions of fancy and simple, past and present. “I am, to be sure, a classical architect,” says Schafer. “As important as a commitment to classicism has been to me, no less meaningful is the desire to create architecture that is effectively responsive to a set of circumstances.” While Schafer is absolutely a classical architect, he is in fact a modern traditionalist, and A Place To Call Home showcases how he interprets traditional principles for a multiplicity of architectural styles within contemporary ways of living. Creating a cohesiveness that shortchanges neither history nor modernity.

Forest Bathing

Nature’s the ultimate stress-buster, says Science. It’s simple math: You look at a tree, you feel better. No one knows this as well as Dr. Qing Li, a researcher from Japan who focuses on something called forest medicine. Li’s work confirms what intuition and common sense have long told us: Being around trees is healthy. But it’s more than just that: Li has found that spending time in nature is not just good for those of us who are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or fatigued. It can actually have positive effects on sleep, energy levels, immune function, and cardiovascular & metabolic health. That research is well-known in Japan, and the idea of “forest bathing” -spending time in nature with purpose and attention, is well-practiced. But the idea of walking into the woods instead of the pharmacy hasn’t yet caught on in the US and other Western societies.

Now comes the spotlight moment that forest bathing deserves. Li, who serves as the chairman of the Japanese Society for Forest Medicine, just wrote his first book. The definitive guide to the therapeutic Japanese practice of shinrin-yoku. Forest Bathing: How Trees Can Help You Find Health and Happiness, 2018.

Notice how a tree sways in the wind. Run your hands over its bark. Take in its citrusy scent. As a society we suffer from nature deficit disorder, but studies have shown that spending mindful, intentional time around trees -what the Japanese call shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing, can promote health and happiness. In this beautiful book -featuring more than 100 color photographs from forests around the world, including the forest therapy trails that criss-cross Japan, Dr. Qing Li shows how forest bathing can reduce your stress levels and blood pressure, strengthen your immune and cardiovascular systems, boost your energy, mood, creativity and concentration, and even help you live longer. Once you’ve discovered the healing power of trees, you can lose yourself in the beauty of your surroundings, leave everyday stress behind, and reach a place of greater calm and wellness. #forestfromthetrees
