Becoming Wise

Krista Tippet Of On Being In Conversation With Richard Rohr

As a conscious contemplative, Father Richard Rohr gives men of all ages a new way into spiritual depth and religious thought through his writing and retreats. This conversation with the Franciscan spiritual teacher delves into the expansive scope of his ideas: from male formation and what he calls “father hunger” to why contemplation is as magnetic to people now as ever. Richard Rohr is a Franciscan writer, teacher, and founder of the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque, New Mexico. His many books include “Falling Upward,” “Divine Dance,” and most recently, “The Universal Christ: How a Forgotten Reality Can Change Everything We See, Hope For + Believe.”

On Being has its origins in a public radio show called Speaking of Faith, which was created by Krista Tippett in the early 2000’s. A journalist and former diplomat who had studied theology, Krista saw a black hole in media where intelligent conversation about religion, meaning, and moral imagination might be. Her show evolved into the On Being podcast in pursuit of the ancient and enduring human questions that gave rise to our spiritual traditions and resonate through every institution anew in this century: What does it mean to be human? How do we want to live? And who will we be to each other?

Mother Love

All living beings have been your mother in a former life say Buddhist teachings that encourage altruism toward others. On Mother’s Day, we practice learning to see all beings as our mother -or whoever cared for us when we were young, in order to shift toward a kinder way of being. The more we engage in this type of contemplation, using rebirth as a metaphor, the more we develop a sense of equanimity and can relate with compassion and empathy.

‘Bodhicitta’ is the aspiration to realize enlightenment for the benefit of others. “The jewel that is the seed of pure happiness in the world and the remedy for the suffering of the world.” Enlightening beings, called bodhisattvas, altruistic heroes of the mind, seek to generate the thought of awakening and then maintain the thought as they fare on the Buddha path. In Tibetan Buddhism, bodhicitta is said to have six causes: 1) Seeing All Sentient Beings As One’s Mothers, 2) Remembering Their Kindness, 3) Repaying Their Kindness, 4) Love, 5) Boundless Compassion and, 6) Altruistic Intention.

Labyrinth Lore

★ Stone Labyrinth ★

Find Your Center May 4th 2019 + Celebrate World Labyrinth Day. Throughout history labyrinths have served as representations of journeys into the sacred. An ancient practice used for millennia by many faiths as a quest for meaning, spiritual centering, contemplation, meditation and prayer. Entering the serpentine path of a labyrinth, you open the senses and focus on the process of taking slow and deliberate steps, while bringing the mind to prayer, chant, or a spiritual question to contemplate during the walk to the center. Unlike a maze, a labyrinth has only one path to the center and one direction out, which is called unicursal (one line). In this way, the labyrinth symbolizes a journey to a predetermined destination, a reflection then of how you walk your life. The metaphorical quest of life from birth to spiritual awakening to death.

★ Sacred Geometry ★

It is believed that the labyrinth’s origins are in the image of the spiral. A curving line around a central point, which symbolizes movement, growth, change, and a continually shifting perspective that is inspiring and life-renewing. An archetypal shape that can be found extensively woven into the very fabric of the natural world, represented mathematically in the Golden Ratio, also known as the Divine Proportion. Classical labyrinths are based on this template, rooted in what is referred to as Sacred Geometry. Sacred Geometry is the reverence for geometric patterns and numerical ratios that are reoccurring and universal. As such, sacred geometry is connected to the belief that by exploring these patterns, one may gain insight into the structures of the Universe.

★ Lavender Labyrinth ★

In our modern world, there is an increasing need to take time for self-reflection and simplicity and just as those who came before us, there is the desire to build a bridge between mind body and spirit. As we unite those aspects of our life experience, we find that we are able to live with a greater sense of wellness and fulfillment. The meditative experience of walking a labyrinth is an invaluable tool for contemplating the journey of one’s life, toward integration and the individuation of the Self. Therapeutic and spiritual techniques of our ancestors are just as pertinent today as they were at their inception. Walking the labyrinth is a sacred journey which offers the opportunity to explore areas of one of the most complex mysteries of all, that of our own psyche. Enjoy The Quest!

Labyrinths For The Spirit By Jim Buchanan. “By moving in a focused and directed way through the labyrinth, we begin to relax, and our sixth sense becomes heightened.” That’s how the author, a renowned labyrinth-maker and land artist, describes the effect of walking traditional and contemporary labyrinths explored here. Examples range from classic Greek and medieval designs to patterns used in Native American basketry, as well as the author’s distinctive creations, which push the boundaries of the form. Connecting the spiritual aspects of walking the labyrinth to the creative act of construction, the guide offers illustrated instructions for making more than 20 different labyrinths.

Pollinator Power

For The Love Of Spring. Pollinator Power.

For the love of  Spring. Let’s all be eco-conscious and wait to clean up our gardens until after temperatures are consistently above 50 degrees. Many bees, butterflies, and other pollinators are currently overwintering in the dead leaves and hollowed out stems of last year’s plants. Please leave the leaves! If you clean out your gardens now you will be destroying habitat to this year’s bounty of beneficial beauties and critical creatures that make countless contributions to our everyday world. Allow pollinators to wake on their own carefully calculated timeline. This small act of mindfulness will help them to survive and thrive.

Care Of The Soul

Psychotherapy As Care Of The Soul: A Training In Thomas Moore’s Soul-Based Approach At Kripalu Center April 26-28th 2019. This program is mainly for practicing counselors, therapists + healers, but students of the therapeutic arts looking to deepen their work may also be interested.

The word psychotherapy means to serve or care for the soul. In soul-based therapy, we recognize the autonomy of the soul in a person’s life as a source of guidance and healing. The soul is central to our humanity, intimate connections, spiritual vision, and pleasure. When the life of the deep soul is blocked, we suffer. Soul-based therapy requires an ability to see what is going on beneath the surface. Since the language of the soul is poetic, we must learn to attune to artistic, literary, mythic, and dream imagery. Intense immersion in therapies that zero in on underlying narratives and themes playing out in a person’s life such as Alchemy, Renaissance Magic, and other esoteric systems provide rich guidance for soul processes. Specially designed for mental-health professionals, this program with Thomas Moore explores the journey of becoming a soul-sensitive human being, able to guide others with depth.

About: Thomas Moore is the author of Care of the Soul and 25 other books on spirituality and depth psychology. He holds a PhD in religious studies from Syracuse University. Moore is a lecturer, author, and psychotherapist working in archetypal psychology, world religions, spiritualities, and the arts.

Valentine Ritual

An Ancient Ritual + Alternative To Hashtag Holiday Hype To Help You Connect With The History Of St. Valentine

  • Think of something that you want to “grow” it could be a business, a dream, a relationship, or even your health.
  • Write down your intention on a piece of paper using the following format: “I plant this seed of _______________ which I intend to help nourish and grow into _______________. I ask the Divine to help guide me to making the necessary steps and to ensure that all is carried out with my highest good in mind.”
  • Light a candle and place it next to a small bowl of clean water. Fold the piece of paper and hold it close to your heart while you meditate or repeat your intention.
  • When you feel your intention has been infused in the paper, drop it into the water.
  • Go outside and plant the paper in the ground, cover with soil and pour the water over the top. Breathe and let it go.
  • Take a moment to give appreciation and thanks to the Universe.

Namaste Nuance

Namaste. You hear it often. You might even say it. But do you know what it truly means? Namaste (nah-mah-stay) is a Sanskrit word which literally translates to “Salutation To You,” or an amplified version, “The Divine In Me Bows To The Divine In You.” The gesture Namaste represents the belief that there is a Divine spark within each of us that is located in the heart chakra. An acknowledgment of the soul in one by the soul in another. An affirmation with an element of deep respect, that brings about the essence of oneness, and an understanding of the true nature of reality. When someone says Namaste, the word itself carries the vibration of true seeing.

To perform Namaste, we place the hands together at the heart chakra to increase the flow of Divine love, close the eyes, and bow the head. Bowing the head and closing the eyes helps the mind surrender to the Divine in the heart. One can use Namaste for oneself as a meditation technique to go deeper inside the heart chakra; and it is also a beautiful, albeit quick, salutation and meditation in action, to express gratitude and reverence toward others.

Highlighting the inherent rights of people to practice indigenous, organic, and biodiverse farming as an alternative to industrial agriculture. With a dedication to renewing a sacred food system, one that is aligned with the natural rhythms of Mother Earth, ecology, human health and global social justice. One Earth, One Humanity Vs. The 1% by Dr. Vandana Shiva, Forthcoming March 2019.

Dr. Vandana Shiva’s most radical and important ideas are represented in lucid form in this essential primer for those who wish to understand the forces that threaten our planet. Her vision of “one earth, one humanity” and its scientific and cultural roots are explained in depth; the monopolistic economic machinations of the 1% are exposed; the genetic manipulations of Monsanto are uncovered; and “philanthropists” are exposed as the new Robber Barons. Vandana Shiva’s struggles on the streets and in homes and farms across the world have yielded a set of principles based on inclusion, nonviolence, reclaiming the commons, and freely sharing the earth’s resources. These ideals, which she calls “earth democracy,” serve as an urgent call to peace and as the basis for a just and sustainable future. Unafraid to confront authority and name names, this new book exposes the global elite, uncovering their links to the rising tide of fundamentalism, violence against women, and planetary death.

Don’t dismiss the elements. Water soothes and heals. Air refreshes and revives. Earth grounds and holds. Fire is a burning reminder of our own will and creative power. Swallow their spells. There’s a certain sweet comfort in knowing that you belong to them all.

Mantra Magic

Meaningful Mantra For A New Year

A mantra is a sound, syllable or group of words which, when recited, are regarded as capable of producing spiritual transformation. A word common in the eastern world made up of two words: man meaning “mind,” and tra meaning “instrument.” So, a mantra is an instrument of the mind. In eastern religions, and the mystical traditions of Christianity, mediators use mantras to center themselves and bring greater unity between the mind, body and spirit.

In many respects, a New Year’s Resolution is a kind of mantra. But, like mantras, resolutions must be practiced daily with intention and integrated into your way of being. A beneficial place to begin is with the mantra: Embrace All That You Are. Make this your new year mantra, or come up with your own. Think personalization and empowerment. Then, meditate. In fact, if you make only one resolution this New Year’s, choose to meditate every day. Align yourself for a stellar year ahead. Meaningful mantras will manifest.
