Mother Love

All living beings have been your mother in a former life say Buddhist teachings that encourage altruism toward others. On Mother’s Day, we can practice learning to see all beings as our mother -or whoever cared for us when we were young, in order to shift toward a kinder way of being. The more we engage in this type of contemplation, using rebirth as a metaphor, the more we develop a sense of equanimity and can relate with compassion and empathy.

‘Bodhicitta’ is the aspiration to realize enlightenment for the benefit of others. “The jewel that is the seed of pure happiness in the world and the remedy for the suffering of the world.” Enlightening beings, called bodhisattvas, altruistic heroes of the mind, seek to generate the thought of awakening and then maintain the thought as they fare on the Buddha path. In Tibetan Buddhism, bodhicitta is said to have six causes: 1) Seeing All Sentient Beings As One’s Mothers, 2) Remembering Their Kindness, 3) Repaying Their Kindness, 4) Love, 5) Boundless Compassion and, 6) Altruistic Intention.

For the love of  Spring. Let’s all be eco-conscious and wait to clean up our gardens until after temperatures are consistently above 50 degrees. Many bees, butterflies, and other pollinators are currently overwintering in the dead leaves and hollowed out stems of last year’s plants. Please leave the leaves! If you clean out your gardens now you will be destroying habitat to this year’s bounty of beneficial beauties and critical creatures that make countless contributions to our everyday world. Allow pollinators to wake on their own carefully calculated timeline. This small act of mindfulness will help them to survive and thrive.

RIP Beloved Poet Mary Oliver January 17th 2019.

Mary Oliver won many awards for her poems, which often explore the link between nature and the spiritual world; she also won a legion of loyal readers who found both solace and joy in her work. She was someone who is in tune with the deepest mysteries of the universe. In her poem When Death Comes, Oliver wrote this about the inevitable: “When it’s over, I want to say all my life/ I was a bride married to amazement.” Oliver’s Instructions For Living A Life: Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.

 Meaningful Mantra For A New Year 

A mantra is a sound, syllable or group of words which, when recited, are regarded as capable of producing spiritual transformation. A word common in the eastern world made up of two words: man meaning “mind,” and tra meaning “instrument.” So, a mantra is an instrument of the mind. In eastern religions, and the mystical traditions of Christianity, mediators use mantras to center themselves and bring greater unity between the mind, body and spirit.

In many respects, a New Year’s Resolution is a kind of mantra. But, like mantras, resolutions must be practiced daily with intention and integrated into your way of being. A beneficial place to begin is with the mantra: Embrace All That You Are. Make this your new year mantra, or come up with your own. Think personalization and empowerment. Then, meditate. In fact, if you make only one resolution this New Year’s, choose to meditate every day. Align yourself for a stellar year ahead. Meaningful mantras will manifest.
